When Chief Obafemi Awolowo died in 1987, amid a deluge of musical tributes in his honour, a line among those offerings stood out, evergreen. Sang by Fuji music lord, Kollington Ayinla, while extolling Awolowo’s panegyrics, he sang: “ookan ile l’osa gbe, Baba Yinka//eyin t’o funfun kii gbe koro enu.” This line profoundly articulated the open life of Awolowo, as well as his trackable history and pedigree. As short as the lines were, they drilled deep into the most granular of Yoruba’s concept of openness and transparency. Literally translated, it means that shrines that a people are proud of are erected…

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu since his assumption of office has made several appointments from Oyo state. Interestingly, none of his appointees is from the mainstream APC in the state. The shocking and unexpected loss of the gubernatorial and states Houses of Assembly election by the Oyo state chapter of the APC and the subsequent consequences of the loss should be enough to silence any political organization. Apart from losing the gubernatorial election, the state chapter of the APC one way or the other did not get the nod of the president for a Ministerial slot. However, rather than allow such temporary set backs to allow for a disintegration of the party, current activities within the party points to the opposite. Oyo APC is miraculously and to the astonishment of…

Yoruba have a solemn way of expressing disgust with vacuity. Wherever elders look forward, in huge expectation, that a respected person would utter words of knowledge – ogbon but its antonym – ago comes from that otherwise venerated mouth, they are downcast. Conversely, wherever ago is expected and ogbon is manifested, it elicits respect and high acclamation. Recently, American president, Joe Biden, was picturesque ogbon. Recall that, arising from his attempt to overturn the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, President Donald Trump faced trial on a litany of felony charges. His trial was considered turning point in American legal…

Local Government Election in Oyo state have been fixed for April 2024. The declaration of the election date is the only statement opposition parties wishing to contest for positions against the ruling PDP should take without a pinch of salt. I have listened to several Press interviews and read several releases from OYSIEC about the Commission’s readiness to conduct ” free, fair and credible election”. Whoever believes such assurances from the Electoral Commission must be living in another Planet. State Electoral Commissions are pawns…
